So that’s university done and dusted. What next?
With our underwriting graduate programme, you’ll get immediate hands-on experience of the insurance world, doing real and useful work from the day you join us.
You’ll receive excellent on-the-job training from our highly respected and experienced insurance professionals, together with a structured learning programme designed to develop your financial and business acumen as well as skills essential for your future career, such as leadership and delivering coherent, concise and compelling presentations. You’ll also get full financial support to become professionally qualified through the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Is it for me?
Are you curious, eager to learn and try new things? Can you think on your feet and make quick, intelligent and commercial decisions? Can you combine strong analytical skills with an ability to build solid relationships? Do you have the courage to ask difficult questions and challenge the status quo? If you’re answering yes to these questions, our graduate programme is for you.
Tell me more!
On our underwriting graduate programme, you’ll be able to combine your analytical ability with your people skills – a trader at heart, you’ll love building relationships and negotiating a great deal.
You’ll get in-depth experience and broad product knowledge through two insightful and challenging underwriting rotations. You’ll spend your first 9 months in your “home” team, the London Market Crisis Management division, which includes kidnap and ransom, Security Incident Response, terrorism, product recall and personal accident lines. Your other underwriting rotation will be 6 months long and will be in one of our retail divisions, where you could be working on our range of cover for small businesses, including professional indemnity, commercial property, employers’ liability or cyber and data insurance.
Through both these rotations, you’ll be given experience of the different types of risks we insure, how we price those risks and under what conditions.
You’ll also get exposure to our wider business through a 6 month rotation outside of underwriting, such as Pricing, Underwriting Insight, Catastrophe Modelling or Claims. This rotation will widen your skill set as well as your understanding of the broader business.
Following your rotations, you’ll return to your sponsoring business unit, where you will start to prepare for your role as an Underwriter when you finish the scheme, developing specialist experience in your field.
Most of you rotations will take place in your home location (or remotely if necessary), with the potential for some time abroad where this is beneficial for your development and the business.
What qualifications do I need?
You’ll have achieved (or be expecting to achieve) at least a 2:1 honours degree in the UK (or international equivalent).
You’ll also have 120 UCAS points or higher (or 300 UCAS points or higher for A Levels achieved prior to September 2017). This doesn’t include General Studies.
Finally, you’ll have a grade B or above in GCSE Maths and English, or an international equivalent.
Any other requirements?
You’ll be happy to be mobile for the duration of the scheme (27 months) and understand that being flexible on location after the scheme will help to accelerate your career and enable you to fulfill your potential.
You’ll be able to speak and write fluently in business English, be numerate, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK.
You’ll be able to join the scheme in September 2021.
