Job Title: Underwriting Apprentice
Location: London
Salary Range: £25,000 base salary plus benefits and performance bonus
Type: Hybrid


Overview

This entry-level opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in launching a career in underwriting. As an Underwriting Apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience supporting underwriting operations across multiple business areas, including Outwards Reinsurance, Portfolio & Data-Led Underwriting, and Transport.

You will work closely with experienced professionals to support risk assessment, data analysis, regulatory reporting, and stakeholder engagement. The role is designed to provide a solid foundation in underwriting, data management, and insurance operations while developing technical, analytical, and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Data Support

  • Assist with processing underwriting submissions and setting up new and renewal accounts

  • Collect, review, clean, and prepare data to support underwriting decisions

  • Maintain accurate insurance records and internal system updates (e.g., S2000)

  • Support the development of portfolio-level insights through statistical analysis

  • Collaborate with underwriters to assess risks and insurance programmes

  • Monitor and report on underwriting performance against business plans

Operational & Regulatory Support

  • Support intercompany processes including premium calculations, loss reporting, and claims allocation

  • Assist with the preparation of compliance and regulatory reports

  • Help manage credit control functions such as outstanding recoveries and settlement reconciliation

  • Resolve routine operational and underwriting queries

  • Collaborate with internal teams including Claims, Finance, Treasury, and Reinsurance Operations to ensure operational efficiency

Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners such as brokers, clients, and service providers

  • Attend meetings, take minutes, and represent underwriting operations in working groups as needed

  • Support the preparation of client-facing materials and help enhance service delivery

Project & Analytical Work

  • Assist in preparing reports such as data fitness reports, monthly performance updates, and renewal tracking

  • Provide ad hoc project support and assist with exception handling within internal systems

  • Contribute to analytical projects focused on pricing, risk evaluation, and portfolio performance

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSEs in Maths and English (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above

  • A-Levels (or equivalent) in the A–C grade range

Desirable:

  • At least one A-Level in a maths-based or analytical subject, with grade B or higher
