Job Title: Senior Data Engineer
Location: London
Salary Range:£80 000
Type: Permanent / Hybrid
Overview
This role is critical to the development and operation of a resilient, audit-ready data platform within a regulated, risk-sensitive environment. The Senior Data Engineer will focus on data engineering, data controls, and governance, ensuring that exposure, claims, and financial data is ingested, structured, validated, and maintained to a high regulatory standard.
The position sits at the intersection of an established SQL-based data estate and a broader transition toward modern data engineering architectures, with a strong emphasis on data quality, traceability, transparency, and auditability.
Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of end-to-end data ingestion, transformation, validation, and storage processes across internal and external data sources, ensuring data is complete, accurate, and suitable for regulated use
Design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines within the existing SQL-based environment, while contributing to the design and adoption of future-state data engineering platforms
Establish, implement, and operate strong data control frameworks, including validation rules, reconciliations, tolerance checks, monitoring, and exception management
Ensure data processes are auditable and transparent, with clear evidence of controls, lineage, and change history to support internal and external audit requirements
Standardise, structure, and normalise datasets to reduce operational risk and improve consistency across the organisation
Design and evolve data models and storage structures with regulatory reporting, operational risk, and data traceability in mind
Identify data integrity risks, control gaps, and technical debt, and drive remediation plans to address regulatory, risk, and audit findings
Produce and maintain high-quality documentation covering data definitions, schemas, transformations, controls, lineage, and dependencies
Partner closely with risk, compliance, and finance stakeholders to ensure data platforms align with enterprise governance, security, and regulatory expectations
Support wider data governance initiatives, including data standards, ownership, stewardship, and control assurance processes
What We’re Looking For
Proven experience in a senior data engineering or data management role, ideally within insurance, reinsurance, or another regulated financial services environment
Extensive hands-on experience with SQL-based data platforms and data warehouses, recognising SQL as a current strength rather than a long-term limitation
Strong understanding of regulatory, audit, and risk management expectations as they relate to data quality, lineage, controls, evidence, and accountability
Demonstrated experience designing and operating data processes that stand up to audit scrutiny
Solid grounding in data architecture, data modelling, and scalable data storage patterns
Strong attention to detail with a control-oriented mindset
Comfortable operating across legacy and emerging data technologies, with the adaptability to support platform modernisation
Confident working independently, taking ownership of critical data assets and control processes
Clear and effective communicator, able to engage with technical teams as well as risk, compliance, and non-technical stakeholders
A degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline is advantageous but not essential
Additional Information
This role offers the opportunity to play a key part in strengthening data foundations within a regulated environment, while contributing to the evolution of modern data engineering capabilities and robust data governance practices.
