Overview
A leading and rapidly growing specialty MGA is seeking a Cargo Underwriter to help develop and manage its marine cargo portfolio. This is a commercially focused underwriting role that combines technical underwriting, broker engagement, and portfolio contribution.
You will work closely with experienced team leaders while still having clear ownership of relationships, underwriting decisions within your authority, and helping to drive new business opportunities across the market.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Portfolio Contribution

Underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements in line with delegated authority.

Assess risk quality, review technical documentation, and structure competitive, profitable terms.

Contribute to the ongoing development and performance of the cargo portfolio.

Support the pricing, analysis, and review of accounts and segments.

Maintain high quality system records and ensure underwriting data standards are met.
Broker Engagement & Business Development

Build and maintain productive broker relationships across the London market.

Proactively identify new business opportunities and contribute to targeted growth plans.

Attend broker meetings, market events, and client sessions to represent the MGA.

Provide responsive, solutions-driven support to broker partners.
Market Insights & Collaboration

Monitor market trends, competitor behaviour, and pricing developments.

Share insights with senior underwriters to support product and portfolio strategy.

Work closely with internal stakeholders across operations, claims, and compliance.

Participate in team discussions around underwriting appetite, product evolution, and emerging risks.
Governance & Compliance

Operate within underwriting authority, internal controls, and FCA requirements.

Maintain accurate audit trails and support internal reviews where required.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across underwriting processes.
Candidate Profile
Essential Experience

Experience underwriting marine cargo risks in the London and or Lloyd’s market.

Strong technical understanding of cargo exposures, pricing, wordings, and distribution.

Commercially minded with the confidence to engage brokers and support new business growth.

Organised, collaborative, and able to manage a varied underwriting workload effectively.
Desirable

Experience within an MGA environment or agile underwriting platform.

Progress toward ACII or equivalent.

Strong analytical mindset and interest in portfolio performance.
