Overview
A dynamic and expanding specialty MGA is seeking a commercially driven and technically proficient Head of Cargo to lead its cargo underwriting portfolio. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a cargo underwriter looking to shape and grow a profitable book of business in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
  • Lead the underwriting of new business, renewals, and endorsements across the cargo portfolio.
  • Act as a point of contact for technical referrals and provide guidance across the team.
  • Issue quotes and bind risks in accordance with agreed authority and underwriting standards.
  • Monitor and report on portfolio performance and underwriting KPIs.

Business Development & Market Engagement
  • Develop and maintain broker relationships to grow the portfolio.
  • Proactively identify new business opportunities and support strategic growth plans.
  • Analyse market trends and provide regular updates on competitive positioning and emerging risks.

Leadership & Collaboration
  • Support the senior leadership team in managing team resources, including recruitment, training, and staff development.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across the business.
  • Participate in internal meetings and contribute to key operational discussions.

Governance & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with internal underwriting authority, FCA guidelines, and broader regulatory standards.
  • Maintain accurate and timely underwriting records and contribute to internal reporting.
  • Support internal audits and contribute to product and process improvement initiatives.

Candidate Profile
Essential Experience
  • Extensive experience underwriting marine cargo risks in the London and/or Lloyd’s market.
  • Strong understanding of cargo-related exposures, pricing strategies, and broker networks.
  • Proven ability to manage portfolio performance and contribute to business development.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to manage internal and external stakeholder relationships.
Desirable
  • Experience within a fast-paced MGA or similar agile underwriting platform.
  • ACII qualified or working towards certification.
  • Degree educated or equivalent professional experience.
