Overview:
An exciting opportunity for an analytical and commercially minded individual looking to build a long-term career in underwriting. Supporting two specialist insurance classes, this role offers broad exposure to complex risks, underwriting processes, market analysis, and portfolio management. Working alongside experienced underwriters, you'll help assess risks, analyse data, and contribute to informed underwriting decisions while gaining the technical knowledge needed to progress into an underwriting career.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support underwriters by analysing complex insurance risks and evaluating new business submissions.
- Accurately capture and maintain underwriting data, ensuring policy information is processed correctly and quality assurance checks are completed.
- Collect, organise and analyse portfolio and individual risk data, including financial information, credit reports and other relevant documentation.
- Work alongside actuarial and data specialists to utilise underwriting tools and statistical models to support risk assessment and pricing decisions.
- Conduct market and industry research to identify emerging risks, regulatory developments and commercial opportunities.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders across claims, operations and exposure management to support the underwriting process.
- Build effective working relationships with brokers, clients and other external stakeholders to facilitate information sharing and resolve underwriting queries.
- Contribute ideas to improve underwriting processes, data quality and operational efficiency through automation and workflow enhancements.
- Prepare reports, presentations and supporting documentation for internal reviews, business planning and external meetings.
- Assist with portfolio monitoring, including estimated premium income reviews and performance analysis.
- Provide support during internal and external audits as required.
- Assist with ad hoc projects and provide wider administrative and analytical support to the underwriting team.

- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team.
- Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel, with confidence working across multiple systems.
- A proactive attitude with a genuine interest in developing a career within underwriting and specialty insurance.
Desirable but Not Essential:
- Understanding of insurance principles, underwriting practices and risk assessment methodologies.
- Previous experience within insurance, financial services or a data-driven analytical environment.
- Experience using data analysis tools such as Excel, SQL or statistical modelling software.
- Knowledge of specialty insurance classes, particularly Energy or Marine, would be advantageous.
