Job Title: Underwriter – Financial Institutions & Commercial D&O
Location: London/Hybrid
Salary Range: Competitive 
Reporting to: Head of Financial Institutions


Overview:
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Financial Institutions (FI) and Commercial D&O Underwriter to join a growing specialist insurance business. This role is responsible for underwriting new and existing business, driving profitable portfolio growth, and providing technical expertise across the Financial Institutions and Commercial D&O portfolio. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing broker relationships, supporting product development, and contributing to the continued success of the underwriting function.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Underwrite new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments across the Financial Institutions and Commercial D&O portfolio.
  • Deliver profitable portfolio growth by identifying and securing new business opportunities through strong broker and market relationships.
  • Act as a technical referral point, providing underwriting guidance and expertise to colleagues.
  • Prepare and issue quotations within agreed service standards.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and provide regular reporting on KPIs, market trends and underwriting results.
  • Support the development of new products and identify opportunities to enhance the existing product offering.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders to support business objectives.
  • Contribute to team performance through knowledge sharing, coaching and technical support.
  • Assist with resource planning, training and mentoring where required.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of underwriting records, documentation and systems.
  • Escalate underwriting or premium-related issues where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, conduct rules and internal governance standards.
  • Keep up to date with market developments, competitor activity, legislation and industry trends through networking, conferences and continuous professional development (CPD).


What We're Looking For:
  • Proven underwriting experience within Financial Institutions and/or Commercial D&O insurance.
  • Experience operating within the London Market and/or Lloyd's insurance environment.
  • Strong technical underwriting knowledge with the ability to assess complex risks.
  • Excellent relationship management skills with brokers and key stakeholders.
  • Commercial awareness and a strong understanding of market dynamics.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple deadlines effectively.
  • Strong analytical, communication and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to mentor and support colleagues.
  • Good understanding of insurance market processes, documentation and underwriting systems.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of regulatory and compliance awareness.


Desirable but Not Essential:
  • University degree, preferably in a business-related discipline.
  • ACII qualification or actively working towards completion.
  • Knowledge of insurance accounting processes and claims procedures.
  • Experience supporting product development or portfolio strategy initiatives.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development within the insurance market.
